History of the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics Education at Unesa
The history of the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics Education is closely tied to the founding of the Faculty of Teacher Training at IKIP Surabaya, based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Natural Sciences No. 182/1964 dated December 19, 1964. This decree established the Institute for Teacher Education (IKIP) Surabaya, which at that time consisted of five faculties: Faculty of Educational Sciences (FIP), Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FKIS), Faculty of Arts and Literature Education (FKSS), Faculty of Teacher Training (FKIE), and Faculty of Technical Education (FKIT).
Unesa's history cannot be separated from IKIP Surabaya, which began around 1950. It started with B-I and B-II courses in Chemistry and Physics, utilizing facilities such as classrooms and laboratories from the Dutch educational institution Hoogere Burger Schol (HBS). These courses were held in Surabaya to meet the needs of middle and high school teachers. The courses included: (a) Chemistry B-I and B-II, (b) Science B-I and B-II, (c) English B-I, (d) German B-I, (e) Engineering B-I, (f) Physical Education B-I, (g) Economics B-I, (h) Commerce B-I, and (i) Aerospace Science B-I. In 1957, B-I courses were grouped into two categories: (1) general B-I courses including English and German, and (2) vocational B-I courses including Chemistry, Science, Economics, Commerce, Engineering, Physical Education, and Aerospace Science. These courses continued until 1960.
To eliminate the dualism between B-I and B-II courses, which did not confer academic degrees, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), which did, the MPRS Decree No. 11/MPRS/1960 integrated both into FKIP to produce qualified secondary school teachers. Later, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 6/1961 dated February 7, 1961, the institution was incorporated into one of the faculties of FKIP at Universitas Airlangga Malang Branch and named FKIP Universitas Airlangga Surabaya Branch.
In 1962, the establishment of the Teacher Education Academy (APG), which later became the Teacher Education Institute (IPG), revived the dualism. To resolve this, Presidential Decree No. 1/1963 dated January 3, 1963, integrated IPG and FKIP into the Institute for Teacher Training and Education (IKIP). With the integration of FKIP Universitas Airlangga in Malang, on May 20, 1964, it became IKIP Malang Central and FKIP Universitas Airlangga Surabaya Branch became IKIP Malang Surabaya Branch. This situation continued until December 19, 1964.
With the integration of the College of Sports into IKIP Surabaya as the Faculty of Sports Science in 1977, and based on Government Regulation No. 27/1981, IKIP Surabaya had six faculties: Faculty of Educational Sciences (FIP), Faculty of Language and Arts Education (FPBS), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (FPMIPA), Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FPIPS), Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK), and Faculty of Sports and Health Education (FPOK).
Subsequently, based on Presidential Decree No. 93/1999 dated August 4, 1999, IKIP Surabaya was granted a broader mandate and transformed into Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), managing six faculties: Faculty of Education (FIP), Faculty of Language and Literature (FBS), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS), Faculty of Engineering (FT), and Faculty of Sports Sciences (FIK).
Undergraduate Program in Mathematics Education initially developed within the Mathematics Department. Between 1964 and 1978, the Mathematics Department of FKIE IKIP Surabaya only offered a Mathematics Education study program, which consisted of a bachelor's degree (S1) and a junior bachelor's degree (BA) program. Subsequently, during the period 1979-1988, the Mathematics Department of FPMIPA IKIP Surabaya still had a Mathematics Education study program, offering S1 and diploma programs (D1, D2, and D3). Then, during the period 1989-1999, the Mathematics Department of FPMIPA IKIP Surabaya still had a Mathematics Education study program, offering S1 programs. From 2000 to 2023, the Unesa Mathematics Education S1 program was under the Mathematics Department of the Unesa Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Starting in 2023, the use of the term “department” was discontinued at Unesa. Therefore, from 2023 to the present, the Unesa Undergraduate Program in Mathematics Education has been directly under the Unesa Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
